Mini-Tour
Shihlin Presidential
Residence
(Source: Taipei Travel Net)
The Shihlin
Official Residence is located on Chungshan North Road in Taipei City's
Shihlin District. It was the former home of the late President Chiang
Kai-shek. In 1996, the Shihlin Official Residence was placed under the
care of the Taipei City Government and partially opened to the public,
lifting the veil of mystery that had hung over the estate for nearly
half a century.
On the tree-lined path leading
to the residence, the first thing we see is Madame Chiang¡¦s former
Cadillac. A bit further is her beloved rose garden, which comes into
fragrant bloom every March to May. The white plum trees, which was
Chiang Kai-Shek¡¦s favorite, keep company with Madame Chiang¡¦s roses.
Xinlanting (¡§New Orchid
Pavilion¡¨) offers a good vantage of the many different orchid species
grown on the estate. Because the former president visited this chapel
every year during his lifetime, it is called the ¡§Chapel of Life.¡¨ To
have a place to pray, Chiang Kai-Shek and his wife built ¡§Victory
Chapel.¡¨ The interior is quite simple and dignified; thus this site has
been used in the past for weddings of descendants of the Chiang family.
The
Ecology Garden used to be the farm which provides vegetables for
Chiang¡¦s daily life. It was established by the Office of the Park and by
the Chi-Sing Eco-conservation Foundation in 2000. Now, it is a famous
place for outside-classroom-teaching in the Taipei area.
At the Youth Café, you can enjoy
¡§Madame¡¦s Steak¡¨ and ¡§Madame¡¦s Breakfast¡¨ which includes toast, coffee
and celery salad. The menu explains the history of this breakfast and
Madame Chiang Kai-shek¡¦s views on nutrition.
Then across the main building,
there are one Chinese style garden and the other Western garden,
plotting a variety of flowers. It is too beautiful for words when
blossoming. The nonscheduled flowers exhibitions are also attractive to
the thousands of people to drop on the horticulture exhibition hall.

Yangmingshan
used to be known as Caoshan(Grass Mountain), a term which embraced the
whole area of Mt. Datun, Mt. Cising and Mt. Shamao with its grassy
slopes. In Taiwan's early pioneering days, mainland immigrants from
Changchow and Chuanchow farmed here. In the late 19th century the area
still belonged to Danshuei district, but eventually the Japanese
colonial authorities incorporated it into Taipei. Caoshan Management
Bureau, established in 1945, was redesignated as Yangmingshan Management
Bureau in 1950 when the area was renamed Yangmingshan at the suggestion
of local representatives, in honor of the Ming dynasty philosopher Wang
Yang-ming(1472-1529). Taipei City became a municipality under the direct
jurisdiction of the Executive Yuan in July 1967, and in 1968 the
Yangmingshan Management Bureau was formally taken over by the Taipei
City Government. The name Yangmingshan was carried over when the
national park was established on September 16, 1985.
